Abstract

Imam Khomeini (RA), as the leader of an Islamic movement, went beyond his political role and engaged deeply as a jurist, philosopher, and mystic in understanding the realities of society. He acknowledged the civilizational stagnation in the Islamic world and emphasized the necessity of returning to pure Islam while critically evaluating Western civilization. This study examines the causes of stagnation and the pathways toward achieving an ideal civilization from Imam Khomeini’s perspective. Using a descriptive-analytical method and the analysis of library-based documents, this paper seeks to answer the question of what factors contribute to the decline of Muslim civilization and which elements can facilitate progress toward a renewed Islamic civilization.

The findings of this study indicate that education plays a crucial role in both the decline and formation of civilization. Imam Khomeini (RA) critically assessed Western anthropology, identifying its predominant approach as being driven by lust and wrath, which he regarded as having a detrimental impact on Islamic education. He strongly emphasized the importance of proper human education, considering the mission of prophets and religions to be the cultivation of monotheistic, rational, and diligent individuals who can resist colonialism and tyranny while actively participating in the establishment and advancement of civilization. Therefore, Imam Khomeini’s educational approach is considered an essential factor in achieving social and political objectives in the pursuit of an Islamic civilization.
