Tracing the Roots of Western Hostility toward the Islamic Republic of Iran Based on the Interviews of Imam Khomeini (RA) (With an Emphasis on the Conduct of the United States)
This study, aimed at examining the roots of Western hostility toward the Islamic Republic of Iran, adopts a novel approach by centering its analysis on interviews conducted by Imam Khomeini with foreign journalists. Utilizing content analysis, the study addresses the question of what underlies the enmity of Western governments—particularly the United States—toward the Revolution and the Islamic Republic, and identifies the intellectual and practical domains that have generated the greatest Western dissatisfaction with Iran’s authentic Islamic and national movement. The article posits that the roots of this hostility formed not after the Revolution's victory, but during the struggle against the Shah. An examination of the recurring questions posed by Western journalists to the Imam reveals that this hostility can be assessed across six key areas: the nature of the Islamic Republic; the nature of relations with the US and the West; the state of civil liberties in the new system; the nature of relations with Israel; the status of women; and the situation of minorities post-revolution. In short, a close examination of the bilateral relationship indicates that it is precisely because of these six factors that the Islamic Republic of Iran has faced threats, sanctions, assassinations, and even war from the Western camp. Data collection was conducted through library and archival research, as well as the use of electronic sources.
